Why South Africa

South Africa is a land of superlatives, offering a mix of untamed wilderness, breathtaking coastlines, and vibrant cities that feels almost impossible to capture in words. Imagine the thrill of watching the Big Five in Kruger National Park at sunrise, the road unfolding before you along Chapman’s Peak Drive, or sipping world-class wines in the rolling vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Every adventure feels like stepping into a new world, from rugged mountains to shimmering lagoons and endless stretches of beach.

But South Africa is more than its landscapes - it’s also one of the most open and progressive countries on the continent for LGBTQ+ travellers. Nowhere is this more evident than in Cape Town, with its lively Green Point district, buzzing nightlife, and a community that embraces diversity with warmth and pride. It’s a place where gay travellers can feel at ease while soaking up the city’s unique mix of culture, history, and natural beauty.

What makes South Africa unforgettable is this perfect blend of adventure, openness, and soul. Whether it’s a safari under starlit skies, a walk along a penguin-filled beach, or a night out in the Mother City, this destination inspires, excites, and welcomes you at every turn

April is an ideal time to explore South Africa. The weather is pleasantly warm without the peak summer crowds, making safaris especially rewarding as wildlife gathers around watering holes during this time of year. In Cape Town and along the coast, crisp skies and golden autumn light create perfect conditions for sightseeing, wine tasting, and soaking up the country’s stunning natural beauty.

Where Nature
Writes the Story

"The moment we drove through Kruger in an open jeep and suddenly spotted a lioness in the tall grass will stay with me forever. Being that close to the wild made me realize how small we are - and how truly magnificent nature can be."

your itinerary

Day 1

Welkom! When you arrive in Johannesburg, a driver will be ready to take you to your hotel in Pretoria. By dinnertime at the latest, you’ll meet the other guys and your guide share the first moments of excitement for the unforgettable gay adventure tour that lies ahead.

Day 2

En route to Hazyview: On your way to Hazyview along the scenic Panorama Route, the road winds past lush mango and macadamia plantations. The journey takes you through the dramatic landscapes of the Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest green canyons in the world. Stops along the way reveal some of South Africa’s most impressive natural wonders - from the striking rock formations of the Three Rondavels and the swirling Bourke’s Luck Potholes to the breathtaking views at God’s Window. By evening, you’ll arrive in Mpumalanga, the “place of the rising sun,” where a charming guesthouse (Sanbonani Resort Hotel) awaits you.

Day 3

Safari adventure: It may not be a “best kept secret”, but it’s an absolute must-see: Kruger National Park. From the seat of an open off-road vehicle, the park reveals an endless parade of photo opportunities - soaring vultures and eagles, elegant giraffes, playful hyenas, and striking trees like the baobab and sausage tree. And of course, with a little luck, you might spot all of the legendary Big Five. If not, don’t worry - another game drive awaits you later this afternoon. Gay holidays don’t get more adventurous than this!

DAY 4

Jungle lullaby: Today, you’ll make your way to the Karongwe Game Reserve near Edeni, where your next adventure awaits. In the afternoon, you’ll set out on another thrilling game drive. Later, after dinner, you’ll enjoy a sundowner as the sky deepens into twilight, and as the stars appear, the bush will come alive with the enchanting sounds of the night.

DAY 5

Show time: You’ll start the day at 5 a.m., when the first light of day touches the savannah. After a quick cup of coffee or tea and some cookies, you’ll set off into the wild, ready to witness the magic of the morning. With the ranger at the wheel of the jeep, you’re free to focus on capturing incredible images of the Big Five - rhinos, elephants, lions, leopards, and buffalo - as they move through their natural habitat. Back at the lodge, a hearty breakfast awaits you. Why not take a dip in the pool, soak up the sun, and relax before the afternoon safari? The reserve is home to 365 bird species, each waiting to be spotted and photographed. As night falls, you’ll enjoy a gin and tonic by the campfire while gazing up at the star-filled sky - can you find the Southern Cross shining above?

Day 6

Next stop, Cape Town: After one last morning game drive, you’ll transfer to Hoedspruit Airport and take a short flight to Cape Town. Your hotel is in the heart of Green Point, one of the city’s liveliest districts and a favourite spot for the gay community, filled with welcoming bars, stylish restaurants, and buzzing clubs. From here, the best of the Mother City is at your doorstep. On a city tour, you’ll soon understand why Cape Town is often hailed as one of the most beautiful cities in the world as well as one of the top gay holiday destinations. And if the weather permits, your first highlight will be a ride up iconic Table Mountain. The Aerial Cableway carries you smoothly to over 1,000 metres above sea level, where sweeping views of the city, the ocean, and the dramatic Cape Peninsula will take your breath away.

Day 7

The edge of Africa: Sleep well? Keep your eyes open on today’s ride along Chapman’s Peak Drive, a breathtaking coastal road you might recognise from numerous car commercials. From there, you’ll make your way to the Cape of Good Hope, where fine white beaches, cliffs plunging up to 600 metres, and fountains of sea spray create a dramatic scene. After a photo stop, you’ll continue to Cape Point - reachable by funicular or on foot - where the tip of the south-westernmost point of Africa rewards you with spectacular panoramas. The day finishes with a visit to the charming penguin colony at Boulders Beach.

Day 8

The Winelands: After breakfast, you’ll head into the heart of the South African Winelands, exploring the charming towns of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. Your day begins in Franschhoek, a picturesque valley known as the country’s culinary and wine capital, where you’ll sample some of the region’s finest vintages at a local vineyard. From there, the journey continues along the scenic Wine Route to Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second-oldest town, famous for its oak-lined streets and distinctive Cape Dutch architecture. Here, you’ll round off the experience with another tasting at the renowned Spier Wine Farm, a perfect finale to a day dedicated to fine wines and stunning landscapes. Cheers to an amazing gay holiday!

Day 9

Oudtshoorn: Today you’ll say goodbye to Cape Town and set out eastward along the iconic Route 62, often described as South Africa’s most scenic drive. Rolling vineyards, rugged mountains, and endless open landscapes will accompany you on your way to Oudtshoorn, the charming capital of the Little Karoo and famous for its ostrich farms. Once you arrive, the rest of the day is yours to relax and explore at your own pace - perhaps take a stroll through town, unwind at your guesthouse, or simply soak in the slower rhythm of life in this unique region.

Day 10

Ostriches everywhere: The real stars of Oudtshoorn aren’t on a stage but out in the fields - with feathers, delicious meat, and a famously cocky expression. Ever wondered if ostriches really bury their heads in the sand? Today you’ll find out, as you learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about these fascinating birds during a visit to an ostrich farm. Afterwards, the journey continues over the mountains to Wilderness, where you officially join the world-famous Garden Route. This coastal stretch is celebrated for its sweeping beaches, indigenous forests, and lush scenery - the perfect setting for the next stage of your gay adventure!

Day 11

Hanging around: As you gaze out the window, the Garden Route landscape of untamed Africa unfolds before you. Your next stop is Tsitsikamma National Park, a region famous for its ancient forests, rugged coastline, and crystal-clear rivers. On a scenic hike, you’ll wander along a narrow beach and follow a winding path through the coastal forest, where breathtaking viewpoints appear at every turn. The trail’s highlight is the 77-metre suspension bridge, swaying gently above the river mouth. Afterwards, you’ll continue to Knysna, an idyllic resort town set on the edge of a wide, shimmering lagoon. In the afternoon, a leisurely boat trip invites you to experience the lagoon’s beauty from the water - a serene finale to an adventurous day.
